The Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers
The Society of Civil Engineers was founded in 1771 by John Smeaton as a dining club to facilitate 'conversation, argument and social communication of ideas and knowledge, in the particular walks of each member at the same time the amusement and the business of meetings'. Since 1990 the Society has made its home at the Institution of Civil Engineers in Great George Street.
The objects of the Society are:
- To be a Society to which leading engineers of the day of all disciplines aspire
- To arrange a variety of convivial dinners and other meetings attractive to members and their guests
- To retain the Society's unique traditions and camaraderie.
