The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have reopened The Princess Alice garden at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, after its recent redesign.
The garden at St Bart’s has provided respite for patients since 1962 and, in 2001, it was named after The Duke’s mother, Princess Alice, to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Princess Alice supported the hospital’s charity for 67 years and, in 2006, The Duke became Patron of The Guild of the Royal Hospital of St Bartholomew. St Bart’s is the oldest hospital in Britain, providing health care for residents of London since 1123. The hospital provides specialist services for cancer and cardiac care.
Her Royal Highnesses were greeted by colleagues from St Bart’s NHS Trust and given a tour of the hospital’s King George V building. Her Royal Highnesses then met with hospital volunteers, to learn about their work and involvement with patients and staff. Volunteers make up a vital part of the St Bart’s community; providing emotional support and assistance.
