The Duke of York visits China

The Duke of York is visiting China where he is carrying out engagements in Beijing, Shenzhen and Fujian with a focus on his interests in education and skills, entrepreneurship and STEM (Science, Technology and Engineering)

Fujian

The Duke is currently in Fujian, where he visited Fujian Normal University (FNU). The Duke, who is Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, toured the campus and met a number of students, including exchange students from the University of Huddersfield, which is partnered with FNU.





The Duke also presented a number of FNU students with ‘The Duke of York Scholarship’, which will enable the students from FNU University to spend time studying in Huddersfield during their undergraduate degree.

On the first day in Fujian, The Duke of York visited the Fuzhou Planning and Exhibition Hall to learn more about the historic city that was founded in 202 BCE. Covering an area of 15,000 square metres and comprising of 10 exhibition halls, the Hall provides general information on Fuzhou, its history and its development.

Beijing

His Royal Highness’s first stop was Beijing where he visited Tsinghua University, which has partnerships with 50 universtities around the world, including the UK. The Duke took part in a roundtable discussion with some of the University’s 48,000 students.

At Tsinghua University Art Museum, which was opened in 2016, The Duke of York was shown some of the 13,000 items in the collection. The Museum is the largest University Museum in China, and its collection includes paintings, calligraphy, embroidery, porcelain, furniture and bronze work.

Meanwhile, at Peking University HSBC Business School in Shenzhen, Day One of Pitch@Palace China 3.0 Boot Camp took place. The 42 Entrepreneurs received Mentoring and the opportunity to practise their Pitches ahead of Day Two of Boot Camp tomorrow. The Duke will host Pitch@Palace China 3.0 on 14 April.

Shenzhen

In Shenzhen - widely considered China’s Silicon Valley - The Duke of York hosted Pitch@Palace China 3.0 Boot Camps at Peking University HSBC Business School and Wuzhou Guest House. At each Boot Camp, 42 Entrepreneurs each delivered a three-minute pitch.

His Royal Highness also attended the opening of the 17th Conference on International Exchange of Professionals (CIEP), which is China’s only conference geared towards international organisations. His Royal Highness toured the exhibition, which included a Pitch@Palace stand.

On his final day in Shenzhen, The Duke of York met representatives from Shenzhen Garment Industry Association: a non-profit organisation that facilitates communication between the Shenzhen Government and the fashion industry, helping businesses grow and develop.

His Royal Highness then visited Royole Corporation, which has developed extraordinary flexible display screens, including the world’s first commercial foldable smartphone, FlexPai.

At DJI, The Duke was shown the latest drone technology, including a drone which can be controlled remotely by hand-movements.

His Royal Highness also met Chinese electronics company, Xiaomi, to discuss their work in the UK. Headquartered in Beijing, Xiaomi specialises in making and investing in smartphones, mobile apps, laptops and various consumer electronics.
