Centenary of the Gallipoli campaign

Published

Members of the Royal Family remembered those who gave their lives at Gallipoli during a special ceremony held at Sandringham

After attending a Sunday service at St Mary Magdalene Church, The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walked to the church’s memorial cross. Hundreds of locals also attended the event at which a minute's silence was observed and wreaths were laid. Following the service, Her Majesty and Their Royal Highnesses met members of the Gallipoli Association.

Around 58,000 Allied troops died in the Gallipoli campaign, including 29,500 from Britain and Ireland, over 12,000 from France, 11,000 from Australia and New Zealand and 1,500 from India.

The Sandringham war memorial was erected by King George V and Queen Mary, and among the men from the 5th Battalion Norfolk regiment it honours are some who died in the Gallipoli campaign.
