The following message has been sent by The Queen to the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria:

I was deeply shocked by the appalling news from Cumbria. ln asking you to pass my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to the families of all those who were killed or injured, and to the injured themselves, I am sure I share in the grief and horror of the whole country.
