Princess Alexandra visited Care for Veterans in Worthing, West Sussex today – a home for disabled ex-servicemen and women.
Founded in 1919 and originally known as the Queen Alexandra Hospital Home, Care for Veterans has since aimed to maintain a home-like environment for the people who live here.
Anyone who has served in the military forces at any time, in any capacity, and who now require residential nursing care, can apply to live here. Women were first admitted into Care for Veterans from 2006.
There are 160 well-trained and dedicated staff members working here and the care facilities include a physiotherapy department, a large occupational therapy department, a speech therapist, a dietician, and a neuropsychologist.
The Princess meets some of the residents, most of which live here long-term. However, Care for Veterans also welcomes those who require convalescence after hospital treatment or to provide short-term respite for carers.
Princess Alexandra, The Queen's cousin, is patron or president of over 100 organisations which reflect her wide-ranging interests, from the arts to health care.
