The main part of The Prince of Wales's role as Heir to The Throne is to support Her Majesty The Queen as the focal point for national pride, unity and allegiance and bringing people together across all sections of society, representing stability and continuity, highlighting achievement, and emphasising the importance of service and the voluntary sector by encouragement and example.
The Duchess of Cornwall supports her husband The Prince of Wales in his work and role as Heir to the Throne - find out more about Her Royal Highness's royal duties.
The Prince often represents The Queen by welcoming dignitaries to the UK and attending State dinners during State visits. Along with other members of the Royal Family, His Royal Highness always attends the Trooping the Colour ceremony which forms part of the official celebration of Her Majesty’s birthday. The Prince often represents The Queen and the UK overseas at state and ceremonial occasions such as state funerals.
The Queen has always been committed to the Commonwealth and its members and visits on behalf of Her Majesty to Commonwealth countries, particularly realms, have been vital over the years.

During celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee in 2022, The Prince was able to thank The Queen on behalf of the Nation for her many years of service at the Platinum Party at the Palace concert, held outside Buckingham Palace.
In front of a crowd of thousands and a global television audience of millions, His Royal Highness said: "The scale of this evening’s celebration – and the outpouring of warmth and affection over this whole Jubilee weekend – is our way of saying thank you – thank you from your family, the country, the Commonwealth, in fact the whole world."
"On behalf of us all, I wanted to pay my own tribute to your lifetime of selfless service in pictures, in words and in light."
"Your family now spans four generations. You are our Head of State. And you are also our mother."

Armed Services
The Prince of Wales is a strong supporter of the Armed Services and sees them as one of the most important parts of his role as Heir to The Throne. The Prince of Wales’s relationship with the Armed Services consists of three main activities:
- Promoting the role of the Armed Services within national life, through operational visits, ceremonial duties, and commemorative activity across the UK and around the world.
- Supporting the welfare and interests of Service personnel, Veterans, and their families.
- Maintaining the history and heritage of the Armed Services through links with HRH’s Regiments, Units and Formations both in the UK and around the Commonwealth.
The Prince is kept informed of the activities of his Regiments and Units, and conducts audiences for all in-coming and out-going Commanding Officers of each of his military affiliations. His Royal Highness often visits his Regiments and Units in all three UK Armed Services, either at their respective bases (in this country and abroad), or whilst they are conducting training, parades or ceremonial commemorations.
The Prince is almost always present at the annual Armistice Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph, as well as regularly attending other commemorative events around the country to pay tribute to The Fallen.
The Prince attended the marking of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, in Bayeux in 2019, as well the 75th anniversary of VJ Day at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire in 2020. During the national lockdown in May 2020, Their Royal Highnesses quietly marked the 75th anniversary of VE Day at the Balmoral War Memorial, where The Prince lay a wreath. His Royal Highness has also been present at the most significant British World War One centenary commemorations, most notably the centenaries of the Battle of The Somme in France on 1st July 2016, and the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium, on 31st July 2017.
In The Prince's capacity as Crown Prince of The Realms, he was involved in the most meaningful World War One centenary commemorations for the Realms of Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The Prince was present at the events marking the centenary of the New Zealand Battle of The Somme in 2016 and the Canadian events at the centenary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 2017. All of these took place at the corresponding Battlefields in France. Additionally, in May 2015, The Prince of Wales, along with Prince Harry, attended British, Australian and New Zealand led events in Turkey marking the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign.
The Prince of Wales often pays tribute to the dedication of British Service personnel during his visits to foreign countries, often through visits to Commonwealth War Grave Commission sites or overseas memorials to the Armed Services. This took place recently in India in 2019, the Gambia, Ghana and Nigeria in 2018, and Malaysia in 2017.
Another element of The Prince's support to the Service personnel, Veterans, and their families is through his role as Patron of a number of Defence related charities and organisations. The Prince has been Patron of Combat Stress, the oldest UK Defence mental health charity, since 2003. The Patronage had previously been held by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. He is also Patron of the War Widows Association of Great Britain, the British Forces Foundation, the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust, the White Ensign Association, and many other charities.
The Prince's Military Career
His Royal Highness began his career in the Armed Services in March 1971, when he started a four-month attachment with the RAF at Cranwell, Lincolnshire. The Prince had already gained his private pilot's licence, and flew himself to Cranwell on 8th March, in a twin-engined Basset of The Queen's Flight, to start advanced training to qualify as a jet pilot. Flight Lieutenant The Prince of Wales was awarded his RAF wings at RAF Cranwell on 20th August 1971.
On 15th September, The Prince joined the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, under the graduate entry scheme, as Acting Sub-Lieutenant. The Duke of Edinburgh, and his great-uncle, Lord Mountbatten, had both been at Dartmouth. Nearly two months later The Prince flew in a troop-carrying RAF Britannia to join the destroyer HMS Norfolk at Gibraltar. While training for his bridge watch-keeping certificate, The Prince attended a one-day course in escaping from a submarine, at HMS Dolphin, Gosport. This included an exercise during which he was released from a chamber 100 feet below the surface of a water tank. In February 1972, The Prince attended a one-day course in the submarine HMS Churchill. During the next two and a half years, The Prince attended a four-month course at Portsmouth and served on four more ships.
A 1974 Pacific voyage on the frigate HMS Jupiter included calls at Singapore, New Zealand, Tonga, Western Samoa, Honolulu, San Francisco, Acapulco and Bermuda. On 1st May 1973, The Prince of Wales was promoted to Acting Lieutenant.
On 2nd September 1974 The Prince joined the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton for helicopter flying training before being assigned to 845 Naval Air Squadron as a pilot on board the commando carrier HMS Hermes. Following a lieutenant's course at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, The Prince was given command of his own ship; the minehunter HMS Bronington, for the final ten months of his active service in the Royal Navy ending on 15th December 1976.
In January 1977 he was promoted to the rank of Commander before ending his active Royal Naval service later that year.
On his 40th birthday in 1988 he was promoted again to Captain in the Royal Navy, and Group Captain in the RAF. On 14th November 1998, the Ministry of Defence announced that The Prince of Wales had been promoted to "2-star" Rank in all three Services (Rear Admiral, Major General, and Air Vice Marshal) to coincide with his 50th birthday. The Prince was again promoted in all three Services on his 54th birthday in 2002 becoming Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy, Air Marshal in the RAF, and Lieutenant General in the Army. In 2006, The Prince was promoted to Admiral in the Royal Navy, General in the Army and Air Chief Marshal in the Royal Air Force.
The Prince's first Colonelcy-in-Chief was of The Royal Regiment of Wales, to which he was appointed on 1st July 1969 - the day of his Investiture as Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle. On 1st March 1975 The Prince of Wales became Colonel of the Welsh Guards, since that time he has taken part in the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony on Horse Guards Parade, marking Her Majesty The Queen's official birthday. Each year The Prince wears the ceremonial uniform of Colonel of the Welsh Guards.
On being appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Parachute Regiment on 11th June 1977, a few months before he was 30, The Prince asked to take part in, and subsequently completed, the Army's parachute training course.
The Prince felt he could not "look them in the eye" or wear the Parachute Regiment's famous beret and wings badge unless he had done the course. He later said, "I felt I should lead from the front, or at least be able to do some of the things that one expects others to do for the country".
Over the years The Prince has since gained affiliations with twenty Army Regiments and Formations, as well as affiliations with two Naval formations, these links are with organizations from both the UK Armed Services and a number of Commonwealth Countries. HRH has also become Honorary Air Commodore of R.A.F. Valley, in North Wales. Additionally, HRH holds senior military ranks in all three Services of the U.K, Canadian and New Zealand Armed Forces.
On the 16th Jun 2012 The Prince of Wales was appointed to the ranks of Field Marshal, Admiral of the Fleet and Marshal of the R.A.F. in the three UK Armed Services. More recently, in May 2015 His Royal Highness became Commodore-in-Chief of the Canadian Fleet Atlantic and, in August 2015, was bequeathed equivalent positions in the New Zealand Armed Forces to those The Prince holds in the UK Military.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall are among the United Kingdom's most important ambassadors.
Every year, Their Royal Highnesses travel abroad at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to further British diplomatic interests, raise the UK’s profile in the country visited and promote British excellence.
Overseas visits enable The Prince to familiarise himself with a wide range of international issues and to meet many Heads of State and senior officials.
His Royal Highness often represents The Queen at overseas events, such as state funerals.
The Prince tries to find ways for The Prince of Wales's Charities, most of which His Royal Highness has established himself, to work for the benefit of the international community and often visits projects set up by his own charities during overseas visits.

28th October - 2nd November 2014: The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited Colombia at the request of Her Majesty's Government, following an invitation from President Juan Manuel Santos Calderón of Colombia. Their Royal Highnesses were received by President Santos and the First Lady at an official welcome ceremony at Casa de Nariño, the Presidential Palace in Bogota. President Santos and the First Lady hosted an Official Banquet in honour of The Prince and The Duchess. Other engagements in Bogota focussed on traditional arts and crafts, historical architecture, organic food and wool, trade and investment and a celebration of the British Council's 75th anniversary in Colombia. Their Royal Highnesses also visited Cartagena where they celebrated the cultural diversity and arts traditions in Colombia.

Their Royal Highnesses were, in each case, guests of the Sovereign Head of State. The visits particularly focused on commercial opportunities for British business to support our economy, military co-operation, environmental sustainability, social cohesion and youth opportunities.

Working in the UK
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall undertake a wide range of engagements throughout the UK.
Wales
His Royal Highness has had a long and enduring relationship with Wales since becoming Prince of Wales at the age of nine. Prior to his investiture at Caernarfon Castle on 1st July 1969, The Prince, who was at Cambridge University at the time, spent a term at Aberystwyth University learning Welsh, and still often uses Welsh phrases in speeches in Wales.
In addition to attending important national occasions in Wales, such as the opening of the National Assembly, The NATO Summit and the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster, and other engagements throughout the year, Their Royal Highnesses visit Wales every summer for a concentrated week of engagements, known as Wales Week. This sees The Prince and The Duchess visit both rural and urban projects, often linked to His Royal Highness's charities.
The Prince of Wales's Charities are very active in Wales: more than 3,000 of the most disadvantaged young people in Wales are supported by The Prince’s Trust each year; PRIME Cymru has helped thousands of people aged over 50 to start their own business, while Business in the Community Cymru has 300 businesses of all sizes engaged across Wales and has raised millions of pounds of in kind support for hundreds of community projects.
The Prince is Patron of a number of Welsh charities and organisations such as The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama; Ty Hafan: the children’s hospice in Wales; the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen and the Welsh National Opera. He is also Patron of the University of Wales Trinity St David.
In 2000, The Prince revived the tradition of having an official harpist in order to foster Welsh talent on the harp, the national instrument of Wales.
HRH's Welsh home is Llwynywermod, Myddfai, near Llandovery in Carmarthenshire. The property, acquired by The Duchy of Cornwall in 2006, is used regularly by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall when they are in Wales.
Scotland
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall share a fondness for Scotland, spending time in the country both carrying out public engagements and privately at their Birkhall residence on the Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire.
Their Royal Highnesses also visit Dumfries House in East Ayrshire several times throughout the year. The Prince intervened in 2007 to save the house, its unique contents and wider estate for the nation. Following the successful restoration of the house and the estate, Dumfries House now undertakes heritage-led regeneration programmes in the wider community and elsewhere in Scotland. Meanwhile, the estate has been developed as a hub for the many of The Prince's charitable activities, combining programmes in heritage, culture, and community education. This builds on the earlier work of bodies such as the Prince’s Regeneration Trust, which has been involved in preserving Scotland’s built heritage since its very first project at Stanley Mills in Perthshire in 1997.
The Prince’s Trust Scotland has any even longer track record, having helped 120,000 people in Scotland since it was founded in 1976. In 2016, The Prince opened Scotland's largest youth employment and enterprise hub, The Prince's Trust Wolfson Centre in Glasgow. Business in the Community Scotland continues to play a major role in promoting responsible business practices, working in partnership with businesses and other bodies in Scotland. In 2005, The Prince launched the North Highland Initiative (NHI) to support the particularly remote and rural communities of the North of Scotland. The Mey Selections brand was created to market locally-reared meat and other produce and, since then, the Prince has been a driving force behind bringing sustainable tourism into the area around the now-famous North Coast 500 route.
The Prince of Wales, or Duke of Rothesay as His Royal Highness is known in Scotland, is Patron of a number of Scottish organisations such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Scottish Wildlife Trust, Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society, Glasgow School of Art and the Gordon Highlanders Museum.
His Royal Highness recently became Patron of the Scottish Tartans Authority and Scottish Highland Games Association.
Northern Ireland
The Prince visits Northern Ireland regularly and many of his charities such as The Prince's Trust and Business in the Community are active in the province. He is also Patron of charities such as The Royal Ulster Constabulary GC Foundation and the Ulster Watercolour Society.
HRH's recent visits to Northern Ireland have included: the Corrymeela Community in County Antrim; the Loughgall Museum of Orange Heritage in County Armagh; the Seamus Heaney Homeplace in County Londonderry, and Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry, many of them jointly with The Duchess of Cornwall. In October 2017, the Prince made a special visit to communities affected by flooding in County Londonderry.
His Royal Highness supports Northern Ireland Culture by holding concerts featuring performers from Northern Ireland at Hillsborough Castle in County Down, the Royal residence in Northern Ireland.
The Prince of Wales has taken a particular interest in the redesign of the house and gardens at Hillsborough, and has helped Historic Royal Palaces in their work to make the castle into one of the most significant tourist attractions in Northern Ireland.
In 2017, in recognition of the various traditions, The Prince of Wales commissioned a piece of music from Northern Ireland Composer Neil Martin, setting words in the Irish language, in English and in Ulster Scots. HRH also chose and recorded a favourite poem by Seamus Heaney for the museum dedicated to the poet in his home community of Bellaghy, which Their Royal Highnesses visited in 2017, together with the Irish President. The Prince of Wales is jointly Patron, with the Irish President, of the Irish Studies Centre at Liverpool University.
England
As well as conducting many of their engagements each year in England, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall also attend a number of important national occasions in England.
In addition, The Prince is Patron of a number of specifically English organisations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), the Safer London Foundation, the Mary Rose Trust, the Sussex Cattle Society, the Turner Society, Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, Age Concern England, the Elgar Foundation and Taste of the West which promotes produce from the South West of England.
As Duke and Duchess of Cornwall Their Royal Highnesses make regular visits to the South West of England and are both Patron to a number of charities and organisations based in the region.
Investitures
Those who are listed as receiving Honours in The Queen's Birthday Honours and New Year Honours lists are invested by Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge, or The Princess Royal, at an Investiture at Buckingham Palace, or Windsor Castle.
On behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales conducts Investitures at Buckingham Palace around twelve times each year, investing nearly 1000 individuals a year. He also attends a number of state functions such as the State Opening of Parliament, Inward State Visits (when an overseas Head of State visit the UK), and key Commonwealth events.
