The Earl of Wessex celebrates the 50th anniversary of the University of Bath

As part of a special year long programme of 50th anniversary events, The Earl of Wessex joined celebrations in the historic Bath Abbey where University of Bath staff, students, alumni and invited guests will enjoyed a range of performances, music and dance.
Over the past 50 years, the University of Bath has developed an excellent international reputation for conducting world-class research and providing students with exceptional learning and teaching.
It is exactly 50 years since the University of Bath was granted university status in 1966 by Royal Charter, signed by Her Majesty the Queen.
Today we are a flourishing campus of some 20,000 souls...We have much to be thankful for and much to celebrate
Its first Chancellor, Baron Hinton, was installed shortly after during a ceremony in the Bath Assembly Rooms in which a ceremonial mace was presented to the University as a gift from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. Her Majesty sent a message to the University, offering her congratulations on reaching a "most significant anniversary".
The Earl of Wessex, now Chancellor of the University, spoke at the service at Bath Abbey, followed by a Reception at the University.
The Earl addressed University staff, students and alumni during the Bath Abbey service, praising the impact of the University over the past 50 years: "The university brings multiple benefits to the community in terms of employment, encouraging forward thinking, enhancing Bath’s reputation and bringing a whole new crowd to what has always been a destination city."
