The Prince of Wales attends the funeral of President Shimon Peres in Israel


The Prince of Wales visited Israel on Friday 30th September and represented The Queen at the funeral of former President Shimon Peres.

His Royal Highness said: "I have always had the greatest admiration for the constancy and determination of President Peres' work for peace over so many years.  I pray that his legacy will inspire future generations to continue this work

Following the funeral service, His Royal Highness met with current Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.

After meeting with President Rivlin, The Prince paid a personal visit to the graves of his grandmother Princess Alice of Battenberg and his great aunt The Grand Duchess Elizabeth of Russia.

Both The Prince’s grandmother and great aunt were laid to rest in The Church of St. Mary Magdalen, on the Mount of Olives, Jerusalem. Princess Alice is the mother of The Duke of Edinburgh.

His Royal Highness lay flowers picked from the gardens of Birkhall, his home in Scotland, on the graves of both his grandmother and his great aunt. 

The Prince of Wales is the Patron of a number of Jewish charities and is the first member of the Royal family to attend the inauguration of the Chief Rabbi.  The Prince also visited Israel in November 1995 to represent Her Majesty The Queen at the funeral of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
