Appointment of a new Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod

THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT IS ISSUED BY THE PRESS SECRETARY TO THE QUEEN
The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Lieutenant General Sir Freddie Viggers, KCB CMG MBE, as Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, Secretary to the Lord Great Chamberlain and Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Lords. The appointment follows the forthcoming retirement of Lieutenant General Sir Michael Willcocks, KCB.
Background
Black Rod carries out ceremonial duties for Parliament and has certain other duties in the House of Lords. All further queries concerning his job should be referred to Mary Morgan at the House of Lords Information Office on 020 7219 0671 or Owen Williams, on 020 7219 8659.
