His Majesty walks The King Charles III England Coast Path
Published
The King inaugurated the coastal path named in his honour as well as opening the Seven Sisters National Nature Reserve in East Sussex, marking a significant milestone in the protection of England's natural landscapes.
The visit marked the half-way point in the creation of twenty-five National Nature Reserves since His Majesty's Coronation, with Seven Sisters becoming the thirteenth reserve declared within the King's Series of National Nature Reserves, which aims to create or expand twenty-five reserves by 2027.
The King joined a reception at the Salt Marsh Café, hosted by the South Downs National Park Authority, bringing together members of the local community, charitable organisations, and partner bodies who have contributed to establishing the reserve.
Regarded as one of the United Kingdom's most treasured protected landscapes, Seven Sisters is the country's first groundwater-inspired reserve, protecting vital drinking water supplies and 1,500 hectares of precious wildlife habitats. Its chalk aquifer supports rare species including the short-snouted seahorse.
Accompanied by Tony Juniper, Chair of Natural England, His Majesty then walked two kilometres of the King Charles III England Coast Path, the longest continuous managed coastal walking route in the world at 2,700 miles. Along the way, The King met partners whose efforts contributed to the reserve's creation, before unveiling plaques to open the reserve and inaugurate the Coast Path.
Named in honour of His Majesty, a lifelong champion of the natural world, both the Coast Path and the King's Series of National Nature Reserves represent enduring commitments to protecting nature and improving public access to England's coastline.
