The King visits The Isle of Man

His Majesty The King has made his first visit to the Isle of Man as Lord of Mann. During the visit, His Majesty engaged with the Island’s constitutional and civic life, seeing the community and history which make the ‘Manx’ way of life so unique.
His Majesty began the day by visiting the Parliament of the Isle of Man, Tynwald, where The King addressed a short sitting, recognising His Majesty’s position as Lord of Mann.
Tynwald is the Parliament of the Isle of Man, comprising the directly elected House of Keys and the indirectly elected Legislative Council, which meet jointly as the High Court of Tynwald. Tynwald is widely regarded as the oldest continuous parliamentary assembly in the world, with an unbroken tradition of meetings spanning more than 1,000 years.
The King was received outside Tynwald Court and followed a ceremonial procession to the Chamber. His Majesty was led by the historic Manx Sword of State, believed to date from the medieval period, which has symbolised the authority of Tynwald Court since at least the 15th century.
During the ceremony, the President of Tynwald made a Loyal Address to His Majesty, to which The King responded. His Majesty was then presented with a scroll of the Loyal Address. Before departing, His Majesty met community members outside Tynwald, which is situated in the centre of Douglas.
His Majesty then attended a Garden Party for the Manx community, held outside in the grounds of Government House, to celebrate members of the Isle of Man community.
His Majesty met a group of Manx speakers and representatives from Culture Vannin; local farmers with their Loughtan sheep and weavers from the local woollen mills, showing the journey from fleece to fabric. The King also met those who participated in the planting of the Coronation Copse at Government House.
Following the garden party, The King visited the Douglas Promenade, the main seafront walkway of the Manx capital and one of the island’s most recognisable landmarks.
On the promenade His Majesty visited the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway, celebrating 150 years of the Tramway, where The King was greeted by tram staff before viewing the historic carriages and shire horses. The Douglas Bay Horse Tramway is the oldest horse-drawn passenger tramway still operating anywhere in the world and one of the last surviving examples of its kind. Dating from 1876, the tramway is one of the oldest horse-drawn tram systems in the world.
The King then took a short journey down Douglas Promenade on the horse tram where His Majesty also met members of the public.
To conclude the visit to the Isle of Man, His Majesty visited the charity Heroes On The Water Isle of Man, which provides Kayak Angling to wounded military and uniformed members of the public who have been injured whilst on public duty.
His Majesty met veterans for tea in the charity’s main building, where The King heard how Heroes On The Water’s activities such as sea dipping and sailing have supported confidence, rehabilitation and mental wellbeing.
At the beach, His Majesty also met the heads of Civil Defence; some of the Isle of Man Ambulance Service; Beach Buddies and kayakers.
