Inside the Royal Household

There's no other organisation like it. There are extraordinary buildings and extraordinary colleagues, and you can apply your skills in a unique way that enriches you.

With the Royal Household, everyday jobs become exceptional. This is because, whatever their role and whichever department they’re in, our people are part of something remarkable. They provide invaluable support to the Royal Family - enabling them to fulfil their duties and serve the nation. And, working in magnificent and historic surroundings, they’re inspired to deliver to a higher standard.

We are a truly diverse organisation - not just in the range of people who work here, but also in the careers that we offer. Alongside the roles you may expect, you’ll find everything from HR, Finance and IT professionals to Engineers, Curators and Chefs. They all work as one towards a shared and unique purpose.

Building a career here means both upholding cherished traditions and exploring new ideas to take the Household and our work forward. You’ll be trusted and supported, and proud of the contribution you make. Collaboration, variety and challenge will become commonplace. And, in an environment that is unexpectedly business-minded and refreshingly down-to-earth, you’ll be able to take your career to the next level.

We don’t just stand still, we recognise when there's an opportunity to adapt and do so with real enthusiasm

Working for the Royal Household doesn't just mean having an exceptional work experience; it also means working in magnificent historic surroundings. Most of our employees are based at Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace in London, Windsor Castle, or the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

Our Departments

There are five main Departments of the Royal Household, who work collaboratively to ensure the aims and objectives of the organisation are achieved.

The Private Secretary’s Office supports The King in his crucial constitutional, governmental and political duties as Head of State. Organising domestic and overseas official programmes, they also advise on constitutional matters, and take responsibility for everything from speeches and correspondence, to official presents and congratulatory messages to members of the public.

The Privy Purse and Treasurer’s Office enables the Household to operate as a business. This includes vital support functions such as Finance, HR, IT and Telecoms, Internal Audit and Property Services. Many of the team hold professional qualifications in their field, and collaboration is at the heart of all that they do.

I always think of this organisation as lots of businesses under one roof. Because of that, you get to see a very diverse range of business processes and how people interact

The Master of the Household’s Department handles everything involved in the official and private entertaining across all the Royal residences. Their remit spans hospitality, catering and housekeeping arrangements. As such, their diverse team includes everyone from florists and upholsterers to specialist craftspeople and caterers.

The Lord Chamberlain’s Office is responsible for organising those elements of The King’s programme that involve ceremonial activity or public facing events. These range from garden parties and state visits, to royal weddings and the State Opening of Parliament. They handle the Royal Mews, as well as the biannual awarding of honours.

Royal Collection Trust is responsible for the care and presentation of the Royal Collection, and manages the public opening of the official residences of His Majesty The King and of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. For more information about Royal Collection Trust visit their website.
