The Duke of Rothesay carries out engagements in Glasgow and sees traditional skills in action at Dumfries House

The Duke of Rothesay, as The Prince of Wales is known when in Scotland, today carried out engagements in Glasgow and visited Dumfries House to see the results of a Prince's Foundation training programme. 

To begin the day, The Duke visited the live build of an outdoor classroom undertaken by trainees on The Prince’s Foundation’s Traditional Building Skills programme, constructed on the Dumfries House estate’s Education Farm. The same group completed a Summer House in the walled garden at Northern Ireland’s Hillsborough Castle, which reopened last month. The Traditional Building Skills Programme offers short courses and workshops punctuated by live training builds at three heritage sites across the UK.

The Duke of Rothesay was joined on the visit by YouTuber Joe Sugg, who His Royal Highness met on a visit to the YouTube Space last year. Joe Sugg, or Thatcher Joe as he is known on his YouTube channel, was previously trained as a thatcher, and had the chance to meet young students learning the craft as part of their time with The Prince’s Foundation.

Following this, His Royal Highness visited the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), a national institution providing undergraduate and postgraduate studies for more than 1,200 students in music, drama, modern ballet, production and film. RCS graduate and actor Sam Heughan joined His Royal Highness on the visit. With more than 600 public performances each year, they are also Scotland’s busiest performing arts venue. In partnership with the Prince’s Foundation, of which His Royal Highness is President, the RCS deliver strings and ballet programmes at Dumfries House for children in East Ayrshire. 

To end the day, The Duke of Rothesay, Patron of Macmillan Cancer Support, visited the Macmillan Information and Support Programme at Glasgow Life, Mitchell Library. Glasgow Life is a charity that delivers cultural, sporting and learning activities on behalf of Glasgow City Council. These include arts and music services, sports, events and festivals, libraries, community development and learning programmes.
