The Duke of Rothesay opens the Braemar Community Hydro Electric Plant
Published
The Duke of Rothesay, as The Prince of Wales is known when in Scotland, officially opened the Braemar Community Hydro Electric Plant today.
Using water from the Corriemulzie Burn River on the outskirts of the village of Braemar, the Community Hydro Electric Plant will generate clean, low carbon electricity for the national grid.
His Royal Highness viewed the hydro, construction of which began in 2015, and met some of the 200 investors involved in the project. The Duke heard about the hydro’s construction and officially opened the plant by pushing the button to start the turbine.
Any profits made from the hydro will go to a community benefit fund to be used on projects and worthy causes in the local area, with the aim of furthering the sustainability of Braemar.
Following the opening of the hydro, The Duke of Rothesay attended a reception with members of the community at Braemar Village Hall.
Project Manager Michael Bestwick and Director of Braemar Community Hydro Alistair Hubbard welcomed The Duke of Rothesay as he arrived on site.
Mr Hubbard said: "It's a relief, I'm very pleased and it's great to see all the hard work done in the community come to fruition.
"Having The Duke of Rothesay here to recognise the work is the icing on the cake for me."
