The Prince of Wales visits Cardiff

Published

Today The Prince of Wales undertook a day of engagements in Wales, arriving at Cardiff Central station in the Royal Train pulled by a steam locomotive built in 1948, the same year as His Royal Highness’s birth.

On the platform, The Prince met a group of young people who have taken part in a Prince's Trust Cymru’s Get Into Rail programme to equip them with skills for the rail industry. "Employers can teach them the specific skills needed to do the job but Get Into Rail helps them develop what we call soft skills, motivation, self-confidence, teamwork,” said Phil Jones, Director of The Prince’s Trust Cymru.

His Royal Highness then made a visit to the City Hospice, of which he has been Patron since 1998, to meet with patients, their families, staff and volunteers.  City Hospice is the only at-home palliative care provider for the city of Cardiff and offers a range of specialist services, including counselling and welfare benefits advice.

His Royal Highness finished the day at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. The Prince has been Patron of the college since 1999 and a special performance was given to celebrate His Royal Highness’s 70th Birthday.

Emmy-award winner and International Chair of Drama at the College, Matthew Rhys, introduced the show, saying, "Sir, you've been this college's most treasured patron for 19 years and we're honoured to have you with us today.” The invited audience enjoyed recitals of Chopin and Bach, Shakespeare soliloquies and orchestral and choir performances of popular tunes, as well as the madcap Goon Show sketches, all performed by students and graduates.

Of the performance, Game of Thrones and Welsh born actor Owen Teale said, "It's amazing, it's so immediate and apparent, the level of talent and the technical skill, I've been blown away - it's incredible."

Before departing, The Prince met Royal Harpist, Catrin Finch and current titleholder, Anne Denholm. His Royal Highness recreated the tradition of harpists being appointed to the Royal Court in 2000.
