A speech by HRH The Prince of Wales in Guernsey during Their Royal Highnesses's Diamond Jubilee tour of the Channel Islands
Published
On a personal note, this trip will allow me a long-anticipated return to Guernsey, Sark and Herm and a first visit to Alderney. For my wife, this is her very first visit to the Bailiwick whose remarkable islands and resolute people, if my own experience is anything to go by, I know she will adore.
In this Diamond Jubilee year it is the greatest privilege and pleasure to represent Her Majesty The Queen here today and to have witnessed your renewed pledge of allegiance on behalf of the people of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The Queen has asked me to convey to you all her heartfelt gratitude for this gesture - a reminder of the deep roots of loyalty to the Crown which have endured in these islands for over
eight centuries.
Her Majesty is keenly aware of the many enthusiastic celebrations in these islands that have been held to mark her Diamond Jubilee, some of which, Mr Bailiff, you have kindly listed. May I add how moving it was to see the 'Flying Christine the Third' taking its place in the Pageant on the River Thames? It was, if I may say so, especially thoughtful of Guernsey to have sent an ambulance in those atrocious conditions!
On a personal note, this trip will allow me a long-anticipated return to Guernsey, Sark and Herm and a first visit to Alderney. For my wife, this is her very first visit to the Bailiwick whose remarkable islands and resolute people, if my own experience is anything to go by, I know she will adore.
Thank you for your kind and touching welcome. We are delighted to be with you and, in this Diamond Jubilee, to bring The Queen's warmest greetings to you all.
