Royal Visit to the Caribbean: St Kitts and Nevis

Day 5:

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited St Kitts and Nevis today as Their Royal Highnesses’ Caribbean tour continues. 

On arrival, The Prince and The Duchess were greeted by Sir Tapley Seaton, Govenor-General, and Prime Minister Timothy Harris. 

Arriving in the town of Basseterre, The Prince and The Duchess chatted to local residents who had gathered to welcome them to the island. 

At the National Museum, housed in the city’s Old Treasury Building, Their Royal Highnesses learned more about the history of St Kitts and Nevis and signed a scroll to mark the Royal visit and the building’s 125th anniversary. 

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall then travelled to the island of Nevis by boat, meeting well-wishers and receiving a colourful welcome from masquerade dancers.

The Prince visited the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park to learn more about the area and see the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy; a section of forest dedicated to conservation and sustainable development. His Royal Highness had previously visited Brimstone Hill in 1973, where he opened the Prince of Wales Bastion.

The Duchess of Cornwall meanwhile visited Hermitage Plantation House to meet local women, view an arts and craft display and learn more about life on the island.

In the evening, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall attended a reception hosted by the Governor-General. During a speech, His Royal Highness announced the creation of The Prince of Wales’s Commonwealth Scholarships to mark the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth and in recognition of The Prince’s birthday.

Scholarships will be offered to applicants from any Commonwealth Nation in subjects HRH’s cares deeply about, including climate change and the blue economy. The programme was developed in partnership with the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust.
