The Duke of Rothesay views the latest addition to the Caithness fishing fleet

The Duke of Rothesay visited the latest addition to the Caithness fishing fleet during a visit to Scrabster harbour. The Boy Andrew is a 27.5-metre seine netter built by a Danish company.

His Royal Highness was introduced to the boat's skippers and crew when he arrived at the quayside and was then shown around the deck, engine room and wheelhouse.

The Boy Andrew and its sister vessel the Opportune are the only two white fishing vessels which operate from Caithness.

Skipper Andrew Bremner Senior said: "[His Royal Highness] was interested in cod, which is now Marine Stewardship Council-credited, meaning it is now safe to eat as stocks have made a remarkable recovery, and he was interested to find out why.

"He was also interested in the crew and in particular asked the young members about their views on the future of the fishing industry."

For the second engagement of the day, The Duke of Rothesay visited the Captain's Galley in Scrabster where he met owners Jim and Mary Cowie, who established the restaurant in 1999, and is a member of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts (of which His Royal Highness has been Patron since 1999).

His Royal Highness was given a demonstration in the restaurant kitchen, where Mr Cowie and staff prepared a dish using cod, monkfish and saithe.

All the seafood served in the restaurant is sustainably sourced; is in season; is local where possible; and James prides himself on not throwing away any part of a fish.

For the final engagement of the day, The Duke of Rothesay visited the John O'Groats Brewery at the Old Fire Station. 

John O’ Groats Brewery is an ardent supporter of the creation of beers that encourage the customer to appreciate the aromas and tastes of their beers.

They have operated from the Old Fire Station building in John o’ Groats since early 2016, developing beers with distinctive flavours, named after local references such as “Swelkie” our Golden ale, and “Duncansby” Amber ale, with a seasonal “First Footing” New Year ale, which was their first commercial beer sold, aptly, in January 2016. The beers are now sold regularly in local pubs and have been received very well at beer festivals and pubs across the country.
