A speech by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall at Emmaus Bougival, France (delivered in French)
Published
As Patron of Emmaus UK, over the past few years I have had the honour of visiting several Emmaus communities in England. I have found that each one offers companions the same opportunities - to rebuild their lives, regain their dignity and self-respect, and develop new skills.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Mr Assistant-Prefect, Mr Mayors, Ladies and Gentlemen, Companions,
I hope you will forgive my rather rusty French, but it is fifty years since I was a student at the Institut Britannique in Paris...
It is a huge privilege for me to be here with you today in Paris, where the Emmaus movement began sixty years ago. Following Abbé Pierre’s famous appeal on Radio Luxembourg, this ‘uprising of kindness’ became the start of a worldwide movement of solidarity to protect those who are without shelter or hope.
As Patron of Emmaus UK, over the past few years I have had the honour of visiting several Emmaus communities in England. I have found that each one offers companions the same opportunities - to rebuild their lives, regain their dignity and self-respect, and develop new skills.
But we still have much to learn from our French cousins and I have been enormously impressed by everything you have accomplished here. You must be very proud, and I am sure that Abbé Pierre would be too.
One of the lessons we have learned from Abbé Pierre is that we can achieve anything together; and I am sure that by sharing ideas, knowledge - and of course, know-how - we can continue the legacy of this generous and inspirational priest. In these times of global economic uncertainty, it is more important than ever that we work together against the causes of poverty and remember Abbé Pierre’s promise: ‘If you are suffering, whoever you are, enter, eat, sleep, recover hope, here you are loved’.
I would like to thank you for the very warm welcome you have given me today. We will return to England full of enthusiasm and new ideas to continue the Emmaus mission on the other side of the Channel.
